Attending Tidewater Community College is about more than going to class and walking back to your car in the parking lot. Extracurricular activities have become as integral as schoolwork in producing well-rounded, successful students, says the National Center for Education Statistics. According to recent findings, students who participate in outside activities have better attendance, achieve better grades and tend to continue their education further than those who aren’t involved outside the classroom.
Tidewater Community College offers something for everyone, from clubs to service organizations to athletics to theater. Each campus has its own Office of Student Engagement, which promotes activities year-’round, including outdoor socials every fall and spring. TCC’s first student center opened on the Norfolk Campus in 2011, and centers will open soon in Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, each with fitness and dining areas along with gaming centers and study rooms.
The Virginia Beach Campus offers a range of intramural sports, and on the Norfolk Campus, you’ll find “Greens on the Green” – produce for sale from local farmers.
Students at TCC can participate in more than 50 clubs, organizations and athletic programs. Many of the offerings provide scholarship and career opportunities to active participants. Holding office in an organization, actively being part of a club or volunteering for a service project enhances your application to a four-year institution while boasting your resume.
Chances are, if you have an interest, TCC has a club or organization to match.
Are you a computer geek? TCC’s nationally acclaimed Computers for Success program under the TCC Computer Club allows members to learn valuable hands-on skills refurbishing computers that are then given back to students in need (to date, more than 3,000 laptops and desktops have been given away).
Like engineering? The TCC Engineering Club, a student chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers, organizes field trips and competitions, including CANstruction and ASEE battery-powered car races.
Music lovers might consider TCC Chorus or TCC Jazz, and budding actors can audition for TCC Theatre, which offers an outdoor Shakespeare production every summer that has become a staple in the Hampton Roads community. The Student African American Brotherhood assists its members in thriving academically, culturally and professionally, and if you want your voice to be heard, consider being part of the TCC Student Government Association.
From anime to interior design clubs to Bible study, TCC has creative outlets for all seeking to enhance their college experience through extracurricular activities.
Phi Theta Kappa, the internationally acclaimed honor society serving two-year institutions offering associate degrees, has active chapters on each campus. Phi Theta Kappa provides scholarships, opportunities for development of leadership and service and a lively climate for the exchange of ideas and ideals.
