Not a typical student? Don’t worry. Tidewater Community College knows how to help.

Maybe you know you’re ready for college. Perhaps you know exactly what you plan to study. Then again, maybe you don’t.

The Advising/Counseling Team at Tidewater Community College helps students define and achieve their educational, professional and personal goals. Counselors can help address issues related to career indecision, academic difficulty, time management and other obstacles that can hinder student success. TCC has advising/counseling offices on all four of its campuses and at the Visual Arts Center.

Students have different needs

Community college students often balance a job, family and other responsibilities with their academic goals. TCC offers several services to help students reach their potential.

Several special services are available to specific populations of TCC students.

First Year Success: First Year Success improves learning for students during their first year of college by providing support in four areas: orientation, student development courses, family and friends information sessions, and academic alert.

Learning Assistance Centers: Students can find one-on-one tutoring support on every campus. While appointments are encouraged, a walk-up component at each of the centers addresses students’ immediate needs. Learning Assistance Centers are open six days a week.

Job Referral Service: TCC provides employment referral services to assist students and graduates in finding jobs. The college offers on-campus recruitment by local employers and assistance with resume writing and interviewing. Every spring, the Advanced Technology Center at the Virginia Beach Campus hosts one of the largest job fairs in Hampton Roads, attracting nearly 100 local businesses and industries.

TCC has two career coaches and two experimental learning job placement coordinators to provide support services on each of its four campuses as part of an initiative funded by the U.S. Department
of Labor.

The Women’s Center: A leader and resource committed to advocating for equality and social justice, the Women’s Center offers comprehensive, specialized services that range from time management support to leadership training to career resources with an emphasis on the value of networking.

Child care: Tidewater Community College plans to offer licensed child care at all four of its campuses beginning with the Spring 2014 semester, pending licensing and construction timelines. The programs will integrate with early childhood education courses.

The Center for Military Veterans Education (CMVE) on the Virginia Beach Campus serves military-related students and their families. The dedicated staff and advisers at the CMVE help students with admission needs and financial concerns, and counselors on staff strive to ease the transition from military to civilian life.

The federally funded Open Door Project helps program participants improve their academic performance, stay in college and graduate and transfer from TCC to a four-year college or university. Eligible students on TCC’s Norfolk and Portsmouth campuses receive free tutoring, study skill workshops and academic, career and cultural counseling.

Great Expectations: TCC is one of 17 colleges among Virginia’s Community Colleges that participate in this program, which helps foster children achieve success in higher education.

International Student Services: Immigration advising, admission assistance, new student orientation and other support services are provided by the Office of International Student Services on the Virginia Beach Campus.
