Degree/training: Several computer classes through Workforce Development’s CompTIA Series, including A+ Essentials Certification Training; Network+ Certification Training; and Security+ Certification Training.
Why TCC: I heard from a friend that TCC was a great option financially. Also, the curriculum was good and matched my needs. And the professors really know what they are doing. They are helpful and knowledgeable about the technical side of things.
How this advanced training helped her on the job: I now work on the IT help desk for the City of Chesapeake. All three of the classes refreshed my technical skills and helped me gain new ones. The courses jump-started my career, and the hands-on laboratory boosted my confidence because I could take what I was learning and apply it right away. There’s technology everywhere. I even used what I learned at home.
Paying for training: I received help through the On Ramp program that is designed to assist displaced workers. It was amazing to have my tuition covered.
What’s next: I plan to continue updating skills as time allows.
Advice for other students: I would tell those coming behind me to make sure they have a plan about how they are going to use this training. Without a plan, the training may not be helpful. They should know what they want to achieve, have a goal and then focus. After that, I’d say to go for it.
